Barbara E. Bates, 83 years old, passed away July 30, at home, after a long illness. She was born January 27,1935, in Clinton, Massachusetts to Edwin and Bernice Gage, the oldest of their six children. Barbara graduated from Hardwick High School in 1953, and married the love of her life in 1954. She worked as a secretary, a nursing assistant and retail store clerk part-time over the years, but her primary role was a homemaker for her husband and three children. She leaves behind her loving husband of 63 years, Robert J. Bates. Also she leaves her children, R Christopher Bates and wife Vera of Germany, Paul Bates of Louisville, KY, and Julie Schlosser and husband Alfred of Myrtle Beach, SC. She leaves five grandchildren; Christopher Fitzpatrick and wife Kate of Rhode Island, Matthew Bates and Trevor Bates of Massachusetts, and Benjamin Schlosser and Aili Schlosser of South Carolina. She leaves two great grandchildren, Annie and Emma Fitzpatrick of Rhode Island. She leaves one brother, Neil Gage and wife Mary, two sisters; June Przybyla and Norma Caslis, a Godson, Tim Brodeur, all of Massachusetts, and many special cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Barbara was predeceased by two infant daughters and one infant son, grandson Steven Bates, brother Edwin Gage and wife Maryann, sister Marie Wine and husband Richard, and brother-in-law Ignatius Pryzbyla. Barbara led an active life with her husband, living in several U.S. states as well as the Dominican Republic due to her husband’s career. She and her husband enjoyed spending time with many wonderful friends and family. She was a giving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. Grand Strand Funeral Home is serving the family. A memorial service will be held at Grand Strand Funeral Home, 9506 Hwy 707, Myrtle Beach SC 29588 at 4 pm August 7 2018.
