Elizabeth Carolyn Cassel Carfrey Ellis

March 21, 2019

Our beloved Nana closed her eyes and joined the stars and heaven above on March 21, 2019.   Loving and faithful wife of Edward J. Ellis, Jr, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 2nd, 2014.

Nana Betty was known for her love of baking – there was always a sweet available – as well of her love of animals.  She delighted in everyday activities, enjoying the beautiful flowers of each season, watching the cardinals and humming birds at the feeder, feeling the sun on her face and praying her daily lesson.  Nana was an avid knitter making and donating many hats, sweaters and socks to charity as well as treasured baby sets for family and friends.  Nana held the highest standards for herself and those she loved and showed her kindness everyday to family, friends and strangers alike.  She was a dedicated caretaker of many family members as well as lending support to neighbors and friends in their time of need.  She was a member of the Christian Science Society of Litchfield.

The daughter of Robert and Agnes [Dale] Cassel, she was born in Norristown and resided in King of Prussia, until her well earned retirement to South Carolina.  Betty retired after 32 years of service with the original Howard Johnson’s Motor Lodge [now Best Western] of King of Prussia.  Her work ethic and pride in excellence was reflected in her steady rise from her early years as switchboard operator, to desk clerk to General Manager of the motel, winning awards for her leadership and improvements. In 1989, she and Skip, the love of her life, retired to the Myrtle Beach area to enjoy the beach, golf and leisure life together, hosting many gatherings of family and friends.

Betty is survived by her brother John [Jack] Cassel of Orlando Florida, her sister Ruth Ann wife of Bob McCann of Thermopolis, Wyoming.   She took great pride in her adult children:  Carol [Bunny] Cuff; Harry [Kip] Carfrey, Jr. [fiancé Linda Tabor] and Linda [Susie] Husko [Greg].

Nana Betty’s greatest joy were her five special grandchildren:   Julie Melrath [Greg]; Lisa Fincke [Vinny]; Steve [Colleen] Husko; Nicole [Jamie] Czapla; Charissa [Joe] Garwood.  Six Great-Grands:  Tonya Heflin [Clinton]; Jareth Wade [Kayla Garza]; Bryan Speese; Sophia Husko; Michael Husko; Cailyn Czapla;  One Great-Great-Grand: Julian Wade.

Predeceased by infant son, Edward J [EJ] Ellis, III as well as her parents and much-loved dog Betsy-girl, Betty will be remembered by all who knew her for her love of life, positive outlook, and sunny disposition.  Nana Betty touched everyone she met with life, love and laughter.  Her strong will and loving hand will be remembered by all who knew her.  We will never forget her amazing spirit, sparkling blue eyes and boundless generosity.  She will be sorely missed and long remembered by those she loved and who loved her.  To honor her memory, please extend a helping hand or offer a kindness to someone in need.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the special caregivers – Brigidh, Debbie, Tina and Michaele for their loving care and support.  A special thank you to all the Island Green neighbors and friends who offered support and kindness over the years.

Services will be private.  The family will receive friends and family at home on: Sunday, March 24th from 2-4PM.
